Spelling Chinese Symbols
Beginning with A

Chinese Symbols that begin and end with the letter a (using cangjie input codes). Symbols beginning with a include 日 暻 景 眉 巴 艮 門. Symbols that end with a include 間 會 春 旬 etc.

The first two rows are characters that begin with a. The second row shows characters that end with a.

Is it really possible to "spell" Chinese Symbols. Well, with Cangjie input codes you can.

Cangjie input codes link letters of the English alphabet to 24 basic shapes (and their derivatives) making it easy to spell Chinese characters based on their shape. It also provides a method for organizing Chinese symbols so that they are easy to lookup.

When sorting Chinese symbols alphabetically via their cangjie input codes, Chinese symbols that begin with the letter a have a sun shape 日 or a variant of that shape as their top most or left most set of stroke elements.

Note that 日 and 曰 are slightly different characters with different meanings and pronounciations, but both can be typed with the letter a. (In this case and in others where multiple characters share the same input code, you get a drop down menu so that you can select the desired character). 日 (which is generally narrower) has the meaning sun, or day and is also part of the Chinese word for Japan.

Using pinyin its mandarin pronounciation is ri4.

a

日 or 曰

曰 (which is slightly wider) means say or describe and is pronouced yue1.

The Chinese Symbol for Bright or Understand

A very simple Chinese symbol is 明 which means bright or smart or understand. I say it's simple because it's input code is simply ab. B in this case is used to represent the chinese symbol for moon 月 which is the left most part of this character.

ab

The Chinese Symbol for Door or Gate

A symbol often used as an initial element in other characters is 門 which is the Chinese symbol for door or gate. It's code is an and the n is used to represent the 亅 stroke at the extreme right side of the character.

an

A Chinese Symbol for Hope or Wish (and Bus)

Another character that begins with a is 巴 which can mean hope or wish but is also used as a transliteration in words like bus 巴士 since it is pronounced ba.

The code for this character element is au. Generally u is used for mountain 山 but also for the curved shape 乚.

Also note that in 巴 the 日 shape is turned on its side.

au

The Chinese Name for th Trigram for Mountain

Another element that begins with the a code is 艮 which is the name (in Chinese) for the trigram for mountain (the trigrams are the three horizontal lines which are either solid or broken into two.) The code for this symbol is av.

av

It is used as the final element in symbols like 眼 for eye, 限 for limit or border, 艱 difficulty, 銀 silver and more.

Note that in the Chinsym Chinese English dictionary, the above words and others with the same ending element are all directly grouped together in subindexes within each entry. So for example you can click among directly between the above characters to see their different meanings, pronounciations or, how each has the same final two letters in their cangjie codes.

Speaking of endings, how about Chinese symbols that end with the letter a?

The Chinese Symbol for Book

The input for the Chinese symbol for book 書 ends in a. As you can see it has a sun element, 日 at the bottom. As for the top part: The first part, 肀 is represented by the letter l while the next part 土 is represented by the letter g.

And so the entie code is:

lga
土日

This character is pronounced shu1.

The Chinese Symbol for Temporary

Another Chinese symbol whose input code ends with a is the symbol 暫 which means Temporary. For the top part of this character, 斬, which by itself means "behead" or chop or sever, only the first and last letters are use. The 車 begins with a 十 shape which is typed with a j while the 斤 symbol ends with an 丨 shape which is typed with an l. And so the entire code for this character is:

jla
中日

The Chinese Symbol for Temporary is pronounced zhan4 or zan4.

The Symbol for Evening and/or Twilight

One other character that ends with the letter a is 暮 which is the Chinese Symbol for Evening, twilight or dusk.
The top most element ? is entered with a t. The bottom part starts with an a for the 日 element and then a k for the 大 element which by itself is the symbol for big. The entire code for the Chinese symbol for evening or twilight is thus:

taka
廿日大日

It is pronounced mu4.

Here's another look at the stroke elements that the letter a represents.
